Umami Bioworks is a Singapore-based startup developing cell cultured seafood. It was previously known as Umami Meats, prior to its' merging with Shiok Meats in 2024.

Technology

The startup uses a machine learning (ML)-driven process to design and develop cultivated or hybrid cell-cultured products. The ML platform helps to parameters such as cell line selection, media development, process controls, and taste profiles[1].

Traction

In May 2025, the startup announced the signing of a joint development agreement with Maruha Nichiro, one of the largest seafood companies in Japan, to develop and commercialise cell-cultivated tuna[2].

Funding

The company raised US$2.4 million in their pre-seed round in March 2022, led by Better Bite Ventures and Genedant[3].
