Focused Energy is a US-German startup that aiming to achieve commercial nuclear fusion using laser intertial fusion energy.

Technology

Focused Energy is developing a commercial nuclear plant architecture for laser fusion energy, building on work done at the Lawrence Livermore National Lab, a global leader on the concept.

They have also developed a proprietary deuterium-tritium fuel, which the startup claims can increase the energy output 30-fold compared to existing inertial confinement fusion approaches[1].

Leadership & Team

Focused Energy has recruited three key researchers from the National Ignition Facility who helped achieve the first-ever net energy gain in 2022[2]. The achievement is considered a major breakthrough in global progress towards commerical nuclear fusion.

Funding

Focused Energy closed a US$15 million seed round in 2021[3].

Traction

The startup has partnered Amplitude, a major manufacturer of ultrafast lasers, to improve two laser systems for inertial fusion energy[4]. The new technology will help develop and determine the laser parameters needed to commercialise Focused Energy's direct drive laser fusion approach. This project is being financed by the Federal Agency for Breakthrough Innovations in Germany (SPRIND).
