HB11 Energy is an Australia-based startup that is commercialising nuclear fusion as base load power, using a laser boron approach. It is the only nuclear fusion startup in Australia[1].

Technology

HB11 Energy is approaching nuclear fusion using the hydrogen-boron fusion reaction. This reaction creates three helium ions and releases 8.7MeV of energy. One of the key advantages of this approach is the use of boron fuels, which is plentiful, safe, and simple to handle relative to other possible nuclear fuels.

They have partnered the University of New South Wales to design new materials that can withstand the extreme environments of fusion reactors and minimise waste from the reactor materials[2].

Funding

The startup has raised $10 million in private venture funding[1]
